Garment Dye Color Transfer Testing: Crocking, Wash Checks and Bulk Approval

Garment dye color transfer testing helps a buyer decide whether an approved look can be repeated without unacceptable rubbing, bleeding, staining, or shade drift. The practical approach is to compare treated samples before and after relevant checks, test both dry and wet rubbing, inspect contrast components, and document order-specific acceptance before bulk release.

Garment dye gives finished apparel a worn-in, dimensional appearance because the sewn garment is colored and then washed or finished. That same sequence makes evaluation more complex than approving a flat fabric swatch. Seams, rib, pocket bags, embroidery backing, labels, prints, and different fiber blends can take color differently. A garment can look right on a hanger yet transfer color onto a light tee, a bag lining, or a wash load.

What color transfer testing actually checks

Colorfastness is a fabric’s resistance to fading and/or dye transfer when exposed to conditions such as washing, rubbing, perspiration, light, or dry cleaning. Intertek’s colorfastness overview describes those exposures as separate performance factors, which is why one favorable result should not be used to assume performance in every other condition.

For garment-dyed programs, the two buyer concerns most often confused are crocking and bleeding.

  • Crocking is color transfer caused by friction. The colored surface is rubbed against a white test cloth under controlled conditions. AATCC TM8 is specifically designed to determine how much color transfers from colored textile surfaces by rubbing, using dry and water-wet white test cloths. AATCC TM8 also states that transfer is assessed against a staining or chromatic-transference scale and assigned a grade.
  • Bleeding is dye released into water or dry-cleaning solvent and transferred to another item. Iowa State University Extension distinguishes it from rubbing transfer: crocking happens with contact friction, while bleeding happens when dye leaches into the wash medium. Its guidance on color transfer also notes that dark and deeply dyed garments deserve particular attention.
  • Color change is the garment itself becoming lighter, duller, or otherwise different after a treatment. It is not identical to staining on another textile.
  • Staining is unwanted color appearing on an adjacent material. In a wash check, it can matter as much as the garment’s own color change.

These distinctions matter in an RFQ. “Colorfastness must be good” gives neither a laboratory nor a supplier a usable target. “Assess dry and wet rubbing transfer, then assess color change and staining after the agreed wash procedure on the approved bulk shade” is a testable instruction.

Why garment dye needs a broader approval view

A garment-dyed tee or hoodie is a system, not a single textile. The shell fabric may be cotton jersey or fleece, while rib, sewing thread, drawcord, zipper tape, woven labels, prints, patches, and pocketing may use different materials. Their starting colors and dye affinity may differ. Wash effects can also create seam highlights, abrasion marks, and uneven tone that are desirable only within a defined visual range.

This is why a buyer should compare two kinds of evidence:

  1. Appearance evidence: the approved reference sample, a shade band where relevant, photographs taken under agreed lighting, and written notes on acceptable wash character.
  2. Transfer evidence: controlled rubbing checks and wash checks conducted on a representative sample, with the method, condition, result, and specimen identity recorded.

Dry versus wet crocking: the buyer decision

Dry crocking represents rubbing with a dry white cloth. It is relevant to everyday contact with light garments, upholstery, bags, footwear, and hands. Wet crocking uses a water-wet white cloth, so it is useful for conditions where moisture may change surface transfer behavior, including damp wear or wet handling.

AATCC TM8 provides both dry and wet procedures and explicitly allows testing before, after, or before and after treatments such as washing, dry cleaning, shrinkage, ironing, and finishing, because those treatments may affect transfer. AATCC TM8 That flexibility is especially useful for garment dye: the buyer can require evaluation of the actual washed and finished condition intended for shipment rather than treating an earlier fabric result as final proof.

Do not interpret a grade without its context. Ask for the method edition, whether the result is dry or wet, the specimen description, treatment state, and evaluation scale. Also ask whether the sampled area included a representative body panel, a seam or rib transition where applicable, and any visibly high-risk finish. A result from an unwashed cutting may not describe a finished vintage-washed garment.

A practical comparison framework for buyers

Use the following framework at sample approval and again before bulk release. It keeps visual preference separate from preventable transfer risk.

1. Establish the intended appearance

Describe the target in concrete terms: base shade, high-low variation, seam brightness, abrasion level, enzyme or pigment effect, and acceptable panel-to-panel variation. State whether a darker cuff, lighter rib, mottled pocket edge, or tonal print is intentional. Attach the approved physical sample or controlled reference images to the production record.

2. Identify contrasting panels and trims

List every light, white, pale, coated, or differently colored component that could reveal staining or uneven uptake:

  • contrast collars, side panels, bindings, or appliqué;
  • white or light rib cuffs and hems;
  • drawcords, zipper tape, pocket bags, mesh linings, and tapes;
  • embroidery thread, woven patches, heat transfers, screen prints, and neck prints;
  • care labels, size labels, hangtags, and packaging materials that touch the garment.

A contrast component may be intentionally dyed, intentionally protected, or expected to remain close to its original color. The specification should say which. “Contrast trim to remain clean after the agreed wash check” is clearer than discovering a dyed drawcord after bulk washing.

3. Match checks to actual risk

For dark garment dye, rich brights, pigment effects, or styles expected to contact light layers, request both dry and wet crocking checks. For garments likely to be laundered with other textiles, specify a wash check that assesses both color change and staining. For a print, patch, or embroidery application, include that finished decoration in the sample whenever it could affect rubbing, washing, or visual contrast.

4. Define acceptance before results arrive

Write acceptance criteria by style and condition, rather than applying an assumed market-wide grade. A luxury dark pigment-dyed hoodie, a children’s uniform, a white-and-navy color-block jersey, and a pale garment-dyed tee may need different thresholds and different adjacent-material checks. If a retailer, licensing program, target market, or customer manual sets requirements, place those requirements in the RFQ and obtain confirmation of the applicable method before sampling.

A supplier’s report is useful only when it can be tied to a decision: release, revise, retest, or hold. Specify who may approve a deviation, whether a second sample is required, and whether a corrected finish must be compared with the original approved appearance.

Sample-to-bulk approval workflow

  1. Build a color-risk brief before development. Identify shell composition, dye or wash direction, shade depth, contrast materials, embellishments, end use, care label, and target market. Flag dark, saturated, pigment-dyed, heavily washed, and color-blocked styles for closer review.
  1. Approve the pre-treatment reference. Before garment dye or finishing, retain a labeled sample or panel that documents the construction, trim placement, and starting color relationship. This is the baseline for explaining later changes.
  1. Approve the finished development sample visually. Review overall shade, wash variation, seam effect, rib and trim uptake, decoration appearance, hand feel, and measurements after the intended finishing sequence. Record specific allowed variations, not just “approved.”
  1. Request relevant transfer and wash checks on representative finished material. Ask whether testing is performed internally or by an external laboratory; do not assume accreditation from a supplier description. Require the method, dry/wet condition where applicable, sample state, and result to be identified.
  1. Inspect the post-check sample against the reference. Review the garment’s color change, the white or contrasting contact cloth where used, staining on adjacent material, trim condition, print edge behavior, and new surface defects. A numeric result without a physical or visual comparison can miss a commercially obvious issue.
  1. Create an order-specific bulk standard. Archive the approved sample, acceptance notes, signed color comments, trim list, test request, and any permitted variation. Use it for cutting-stage shade review, wash-lot comparison, and final inspection.
  1. Check first bulk output before full release. Compare early finished units from the bulk lot with the approved standard. Confirm that the selected test condition and appearance criteria still apply after the actual bulk dyeing and finishing sequence.
  1. Control changes explicitly. A fabric mill change, new dye lot, revised wash recipe, alternate rib, different decoration vendor, or altered softener can change color behavior. Treat any such change as a reason to reassess the approved standard rather than silently carrying forward an old result.

Red flags

Be cautious when a quotation promises “colorfast” without naming the exposure condition; when only an unwashed fabric cutting is offered as evidence for a finished garment-dye style; when a light contrast trim is not listed in the wash plan; or when a report does not identify the sample and test state. Another warning is treating a visually attractive wash effect as a substitute for transfer assessment.
